Dan Harris' Journey From Panic To Peace | Pioneers Ep. 4 - Mooji From panic attack to full power (Paniikkikohtauksesta täyteen voimaan. Teksti Suomi)

Dan Harris' Journey From Panic To Peace | Pioneers Ep. 4

- I hear all the time from
people, Dan you don't understand,
I get it, the science says
meditation's good for you
but I could never do
it, my mind is too busy.
Welcome to the human
condition, this is the way
all of our minds operated,
that's just another story
from the voice in your head.
(rock and roll music)
- Many of us have wake
up calls in our lives.
For ABC news anchor Dan
Harris, it came in the form
of a panic attack on live television.
Knowing he had to make a change, he made
mindfulness meditation
part of his daily life
and he's urging others to do the same.
(mellow music)
- I have an amazing job.
I just love my job.
I've been at ABC for 16 years.
I'm the co-anchor of Nightline, on top of
working at GMA, I'm really lucky.
I don't take it for granted.
I've been meditating for
six and a half years.
I can't believe that
sentence is leaving my lips.
I was a massive skeptic, I
thought meditation was only
for people who live in a
yurt and are really into
aromatherapy and Cat
Stevens and use the word
Namaste with no irony.
Okay, you wanna level?
Working mom of--
This whole thing started for me in 2004.
I was anchoring the news
updates on Good Morning America.
- We're gonna go now to Dan
Harris, who's at the news desk
Dan?
- Good morning Charlie
and Dianne-- a few seconds into my shtick
I Just started to lose it.
People who take cholesterol
lowering drugs called statins
for at least five years may
also lower their risk for cancer
but it's too early to prescribe statins
slowly for cancer production.
My heart was racing, my mouth dried up,
my lungs seized up, I just couldn't talk.
I had a panic attack on
national television, so I had to
do something I'd never
done before, which was
quit right in the middle.
- [Voiceover] All right, thanks
very much, Dan Harris at--
- After that, I went to see
a shrink, and one of the
questions was, andquot;Do you do drugs?andquot;
(mellow music)
(jet engines)
I wasn't doing drugs every day, but I was
doing it enough, according to my shrink,
to artificially raise the
level of adrenaline in my brain
and prime me to have this panic attack,
so I stopped doing drugs.
My boss at the time, Peter
Jennings, took me aside one day
and said that he wanted me to cover
faith and spirituality for ABC News.
I was not interested, but
he didn't care, he told me
I was gonna do it anyway,
and it was through covering
faith and spirituality that I
stumbled upon a self-help book
by a guy named Eckhart Tolle.
Tolle started to unfurl a
thesis about the human condition
that I had never heard
before, which is that we
all have a voice in our heads.
That voice that chases
you out of bed and is just
comparing yourself to other
people, judging other people,
criticizing yourself, and
this explained the most
embarrassing moment of my life,
this explained the panic attack.
So, it was a pretty
powerful experience for me.
And he had a really
practical piece of advice,
which is meditate.
I literally have other
people's voices piped
directly into my head,
and I have to get it right
on short notice in front
of a lot of people.
Meditation really helps me stay on task,
and five to 10 minutes a
day is enough to change
your relationship to
the voice in your head,
and that changes your life.
So, if I'm walking down the street,
I can be somewhat mindful.
The way to do that is just
to make little mental notes.
The feeling of the air on
your face, the feeling of
your footfalls, what you're hearing.
It can make you more focused,
more resilient, less reactive,
and that's a hugely
important thing to have,
in all areas of your life.
(gentle music)
It was my view that
meditation was kinda stuck
in this little Buddhist ghetto,
and I thought maybe I
could do a little bit
to help burst it out of that.
(gentle music)
Essentially I wrote the book
for the pre-meditation me.
A type-A striver, maybe even cynical.
What would have convinced me to meditate?
I think there's a pantheon
of no-brainers that we know
we need in order to be happy.
Having good relationships,
loving what you do,
taking care of your body, and now I think
meditation has to go in that bucket.
This doesn't magically
make you a star in the NBA
or it won't regrow your hair or whatever,
but it will change your life.
