EVERYBODY POOPS, EVEN TRANS PEOPLE
[INTRO MUSIC]
Food glorious food! It gives our bodies energy
and keeps us healthy and strong. It comes
in various consistencies and flavors, but
regardless of what you eat, it goes through
your digestive system and eventually comes
out the other way.
Your rectum is at the end of your intestine,
and is 12 cm long.
It stores your fecal matter and Sometimes
it can hold up to 40 pounds of waste.
Your bladder is a pear-shaped muscular sac
that stores your urine! if it's healthy it can hold up to 2 cups!
But when we're filled to the brim⦠Where does it all go??
Well if you're fortunate enough to have indoor plumbing, it goes right into the toiletâ¦
And the toilet is enclosed in your home and regardless of gender, everyone defecates and
urinates into the same pot!
But what happens when you are away from the
porcelain throne at home?
Well you have to use a public restroom and
you most likely won't be using it alone.
A private space for everyone regardless of
gender is now divided into two.
And when you're transgender, you find yourself
asking: which one is for you?
I use the women's restroom to relieve myself when I feel like I should, but according to many politicians I must be up to no good.
States across the country are trying to pass
legislation that would say
that trans people must use the restroom of
the gender listed on their birth certificate
today.
And their reasoning? Fear that laws allowing
trans women to use the restroom with cis women
will encourage men dressing like women to
sexually assault women and girls.
As a survivor of rape and sexual assault,
I find the use of sexual violence as a tool
in this argument, to be not only appalling,
but blatantly out of touch for many reasons.
First: it's ridiculous to believe that the
only thing stopping a man from entering the
women's restroom is a sign with a skirt.
We've built up these gendered spaces as though
they have some sort of magical power of division
when they don't.
sexual predators don't need permission. They take without impunity
and I find it fascinating that some people
think transgender bathroom laws would give them immunity.
When a man is caught in a woman's restroom
attacking a woman or a child, the idea that
screaming andquot;but I'm transgenderandquot; would be a
genuine defense is truly wild.
But even wilder is the idea that In public
restrooms trans women are what women have
to fear the most
when statistically speaking they're more likely
to be assaulted by someone that's close.
See, when it comes to rape and sexual assault,
you're more likely to be victimized by someone
you know
and with our legal system the way it is, they're
likely to be let go.
50% of trans women report being survivors
of sexual violence,
but the legal system reacts to that statistic
with utter and complete silence.
We have a higher chance of being assaulted
in the bathroom than we do assaulting you,
but for some reason punishing trans people
for the crimes of cis people is the right
thing to do?
A man wearing women's clothing in order to
sneak into the women's restroom is cis.
So why punish trans people who are just looking
for a place to piss.
For many trans people, the public restroom
is a place of stress and fear.
And sometimes it's even more unnerving when
you identify as queer.
Choosing a bathroom, is like choosing between
harassment or assault.
And that's because these spaces are gendered
and that's not our fault.
Not everyone fits into a box and some people
don't really feel comfortable in either.
And I don't know why it's hard to imagine
a world where restrooms are designated for neither.
Our digestive systems are the one thing that we all share in common.
It doesn't matter what we do we all eventually have to poo.
Why shouldn't we have more restrooms designated for all?
Especially ones where every stall is wall to wall.
And perhaps a few private ones on the side for those who can't swallow
their pride.
And maybe it'll be awkward and maybe it'll
be strange.
Maybe it will feel uncomfortable as many
things are when they change.
But maybe im too optimistic, I don't really
know.
All I know is when I gotta go I gotta go.
We shouldn't have legislation giving us the right poo,
But regardless ,I'm going to do the do in the way that I do.
So that just some food for thought and I hope that you'll digest it .
Going to the bathroom shouldn't get you arrested.
And as per usual, Always remember and never
forget that you are beautiful and you are loved.
Bye!
