33 people stabbed to death in militant attack at China train station
33 people have died and at least 130 injured
in a knife attack at a train station in southwest China.
Authorities have said the group of militants
from the west armed with knives launched a
premeditated attack at Kunming Railway Station
late on Saturday night.
Four of the attackers were shot dead by police.
Witnesses said they saw knife-wielding men
attacking passengers randomly.
This man was working at a shop 50 metres from
the station and said he couldn't believe what
was happening.
Two women said to me, andquot; There's fighting outside.
They're killing people.andquot; I said, Don't talk
nonsense. It's very safe here, but people
really were being killed. I walked out and
saw a person with a knife. I thought it was
just one person, so I planned for a couple
of people to try and apprehend them, but then
I saw five or six of them. They all had knives
and they were stabbing people.
Onlookers said hundreds of people came spilling
out of the site when the attack took place.
Last night, everyone ran over into my supermarket.
The supermarket was full of people, including
two passengers who had been stabbed. I was
terrified. They were killing people. How could
I not be scared?
The incident comes at a sensitive time for
China, as it prepares for its annual parliament meeting.
