10. Underwear Bomber
On Christmas Day 2009, radical Islamist Umar
Abdul Mutallab attempted to destroy a flight
to Detroit by hiding explosives in his underwear.
Just before landing, Mutallab ignited the
explosive, but it failed to detonate properly,
causing just a small fire.
A flight attendant extinguished the flames
while Mutallab was tackled to the ground by
a fellow passenger and handcuffed.
The plane made an emergency landing and Mutallab
was arrested and sentenced to 50 years in
prison.
If his plan had succeeded, all 289 passengers
would have been killed, which would have made
it the deadliest aviation disaster in US history.

9. Glasgow International Airport
On June 30th 2007 two terrorists attempted
to bomb Glasgow International Airport by driving
a Jeep into the building, loaded with propane
canisters.
The men successfully crashed into the building,
but security bollards prevented the Jeep from
entering the terminal, which saved the lives
of hundreds of travelers.
Unable to break the barricade, the terrorists
set their van alight in an attempt to ignite
the propane, but the canisters failed to explode.
The driver of the van caught fire, receiving
burns to 90% of his body, and his partner
was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 1991 The Provisional Irish Republican Army
attacked one of the headquarters of the British
government, number 10 Downing Street, in an
attempt to kill then-Prime Minister, John
Major.
The group launched three heavy mortar shells
at the building, one of which exploded in

the government building.
Due to the bombproof windows, however, nobody
was hurt, and the government workers were
able to continue their meeting ten minutes
later.
The other two shells also missed their target.

In 1991 terrorists Ahmed J. Ahmed and Sa’ad
[sah-ad] Kahim attempted to destroy the Thomas
Jefferson Cultural Center in Manila in the
Philippines.
In the middle of the night, Ahmed carried
an explosive device toward the building, and
a set a timer for the bomb to detonate the
next working day.
However, Ahmed accidentally set the timer
backwards, which caused the bomb to explode
prematurely, killing him and wounding Kahim.
Had the bomb detonated at the correct time,
dozens of innocent employees and visitors
would have been killed.

6. The Bojinka Plot
In 1995 Islamists Ramzi Yousef and Khalid
Mohammed plotted a series of terrorist attacks.
The plots included plans to assassinate Pope
John Paul II, detonate explosives on eleven
airplanes, and crash a plane into the CIA
headquarters, which alone would have killed
over 4000 people.
Shortly before their scheduled attack on the
Pope however, a chemical fire broke out at
their apartment.
Emergency services arrived and found evidence
of the horrific plans.
Yousef was captured and sentenced to life
imprisonment, but Mohammed was not found.
He later altered his strategy to hijack planes
instead, and was eventually involved in the
9/11 attacks.

5. Strasbourg Christmas Plot
On the eve of the millennium, four Algerians
plotted to kill dozens of people by bombing
a busy Christmas market by the Strasbourg
Cathedral in France.
During a raid on the terrorists’ apartment
building just a week before the plot, police
found a homemade video made by the group depicting
the Strasbourg cathedral with a voice over
stating ‘these are the enemies of God’.
Police also found explosives chemicals, as
well as a manual on how to construct homemade
bombs. All suspects were arrested but controversially
only sentenced to a maximum of 12 years in
prison.

4. MLK Bomb Attempt
In 2011 the annual MLK Day Parade in Spokane
[spoh-can], Washington, almost ended in disaster.
While preparations were underway, cleaners
found an unattended backpack on the side of
the road, containing a pipe bomb wrapped in
shrapnel.
To add to the horror, the shrapnel had been
coated in rat poison, which prevents wounds
from clotting.
It’s estimated that the bomb would have
killed dozens of parade participants had the
bomb squad not been alerted.
Kevin Harpham of white supremacist group National
Alliance was found guilty of planting the
bomb and sentenced to 32 years in prison.

3. 21st July London Bombings
In 2005, exactly two weeks after suicide bombers
in London killed 52 people and injured 700,
another group of four terrorists attempted
to bomb three subway stations.
The bomb’s detonator caps were fired, but
the bombs themselves failed to explode, preserving
the lives of hundreds of Londoners.
The terrorists fled the scenes, leading to
a large-scale manhunt.
All four suspects were eventually arrested
and sentenced to decades in prison. However,
Jean Charles de Menezes [me-nez], an innocent
man, was shot dead by the police, who misidentified
him as one of the terrorists.

In 1999 a group of Islamist terrorists plotted
to attack four sites across the Middle Eastern
country Jordan, Los Angeles International
Airport, and a US Navy ship.
The plans would have gone ahead had the Jordanian
Intelligence not intercepted a call between
the terrorists that revealed their plans.
Fifteen suspects were arrested, including
Ahmed Ressam, who was found at a US border
with explosives that could cause a blast forty
times greater than a car bomb.
Other members of the group managed to set
sail a bomb-laden boat with the aim of attacking
the US Navy. However, their boat sank before
the bombs could be detonated, due to overloading.

1. Natural Gas Explosion
On April 22nd 1997, four members of the KKK
plotted to blow up a natural gas refinery
near Fort Worth, Texas.
The attack was intended to act as a diversion
while the perpetrators robbed an armored car,
holding $2 million.
However, the plan was never executed, as one
of the Klan leaders got cold feet and informed
the FBI of the destructive plans.
Had it succeeded, it is estimated that over
30,000 people would have been killed, including
children at a school nearby.
