Going Insane in Depersonalization Disorder....the Reality - Panic Breaks Out In Paris After Attacks

Going Insane in Depersonalization Disorder....the Reality

Hi I'm Harris Harrington
creator of depersonalizationrecovery.com
The topic of this video is depersonalization
and
the fear of going insane, and the fear of
developing
a psychotic mental disorder.
When people get depersonalization it's usually
through a panic attack. This could be by using
drugs, it could be through a period of stress,
and
during this panic attack, it is extremely
frightening
because this is probably the first time the
person
has ever experienced depersonalization symptoms.
And these symptoms are not feeling like you
are the
one in control of your movements, you don't
feel like
you're the one thinking your own thoughts,
you look
in the mirror you don't feel like the person
that's
in the mirror and then you feel derealization
which
is feeling totally numb to the external world
like
the world is just a movie taht you are watching
and
you aren't really a part of it. You feel numb
to
everything, things feel flat.
And this also goes along with thoughts about
existence that matter is empty and that that's
frightening, and you might think about eternity,
and
you might think of concepts of the soul.
And you might have during panic attacks the
feeling
that your soul is going to leap out of your
body, and
you might feel like andquot;man I almost feel like
I'm
already deadandquot;.
You feel all these crazy feelings, and you
think all
these crazy thoughts based upon how you feel
and one
of the biggest fears in depersonalization
is people
are worried that they are going insane, that
they've
gone insane already or that they might go
insane in
the future.
And I'm here to tell you as someone who suffered
depersonalization for years, depersonalization
in and
of itself doesn't represent a warning sign
for
developing a psychotic disorder, for developing
schizophrenia or anything like that.
In fact, when you're asking that question,
that's
usually a good sign, it means that you know
that
you're not insane but you're worried about
going
insane.
This is also a classic symptom of panic disorder
and
high intense anxiety.
So depersonalization disorder has tons of
anxiety
that goes into it.
And, part of that it almost feeling like you're
going
insane. Your thoughts aren't very clear, you're
totally numb, and you're having a kind of
a fear of
existence, depersonalization is almost like
existence
phobia. You look around you and everything
kind of
seems frightening, especially when you're
going
through the really tough periods of depersonalization
with frequent panic attacks and things like
that.
But basically you're not going insane.
I mean i know you might feel crazy watching
this
video.
And I've had just terrible days that were
super bad,
I mean, where I just felt like I was definitely
going
to go crazy, I was almost sure of it. But
you're
not.
You're basically totally fine. So, you have
to keep
that in mind and I mean there's a lot of things
you
can do to decrease these feelings, decrease
these
fears, but the fear of going insane kind of
goes into
a lot of other fears that people with
depersonalization have.
The fear of developing a mental problem, like
a
neurodegenerative disease, such as ALS where
your
motor neurons stop working. That's another
big fear
that people have. People fear health problems
in
general. The fear of going insane is very
common in
health anxiety.
And you can do cognitive behavioral therapy.
YOu
need to get off of substances like stimulants
that
increase anxiety.
And of course I have a lot of techniques on
my
website for reducing these feelings.
I've got a ten hour video program on how to
get over
depersonalization entirely.
But it's really important to know you know
just to
reassure everyone watching this video that
has this
fear, because you probably clicked on this
video for
a reason: you're not going insane.
You're gonna be okay and I really just hope
that that
helps you relax.
It's okay to take it easy on yourself. If
you're
going through a really tough period right
now just
don't put a lot of pressure on yourself to
really do
too much because you know you're going through
a
tough period and I think it's just important
to focus
on relaxing, getting your mind off things
and you can
practice deep breathing, things like that,
talk to
someone, maybe see a therapist if you really
have to.
Just to have someone to talk to about it.
But
basically you're not going insane.
That's really all I have to say in this video.

Panic Breaks Out In Paris After Attacks

SOME HID IN CAFES AND DUCKED
UNDER TABLE.
IT TURNED OUT TO BE FIRE
CRACKERS GOING OFF.
RIGHT NOW, TONY IS IN
PARIS.
HE WAS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF
THE CROWD AS THE PANIC BROKE
OUT.
PEOPLE WENT RUNNING FOR COVER
TODAY.
HE JOINS US LIVE NOW.
TONY, TELL US WHAT HAPPENED.
Reporter: I WAS WITH OUR
COLLEAGUE AND WE HAD JUST
FINISHED OUR SHOOT IN THE HEART
OF PARIS, A VERY FAMOUS
GATHERING PLACE WHEN ALL OF A
SUDDEN PEOPLE JUST STARTED
RUNNING.
IF IT WAS FIRE CRACKERS, IF IT
WAS THE BACKFIRE OF A VEHICLE
DRIVING BY, I DIDN'T HEAR IT.
I WAS TALKING TO AN AMERICAN
WOMAN ONE MOMENT AND THE NEXT
MOMENT, I HAD GRABBED SOME OF
THE EQUIPMENT AND I WAS RUNNING
FOR THE BACK OF THE SQUARE SO
THAT I COULD JOIN THE PEOPLE
WHO WERE RUNNING INTO A NEARBY
POLICE STATION TO SEEK SAFETY.
I THINK IT SPEAKS TO HOW PARIS,
A CITY IN MOURNING, IS VERY
MUCH ALSO A CITY ON EDGE.
YOU KNOW, THE USE OF THE
SUICIDE BELTS IN THE TERROR
ATTACK IS SOMETHING OF A GAME
CHANGER.
IT'S SO FRIGHTENING, PEOPLE
WALKING AROUND WITH BIG BULKY
JACKETS, CARRYING BACKPACKS.
IN THE AFTERNOON MATH OF AN
EVENT LIKE THAT, IT'S AT THE
FOREFRONT OF YOUR FEARS.
WHEN DID YOU AND JOE REALIZE
EVERYTHING WAS OKAY?
Reporter: WHEN WE GOT INTO
THE POLICE STATION, THERE WERE
LOCAL POLICE ON THE RADIO AND I
KEPT HEARING ONE MAN SAY RIEN.
RIEN.
MY HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH TOLD ME
THAT MEANT NOTHING.
HE WAS TRYING TO CHECK AND SEE
WHAT WAS GOING ON.
AROUND 5-6 MINUTES, PEOPLE
FILTERED BACK INTO THE SQUARE.
POLICE GATHERED AROUND A LIGHT
POST AND THEY WERE EXAMINING
SOMETHING.
ALL THE JOURNALISTS RAN OVER
THERE, AND THE POLICE WENT
MARCHING DOWN THE STREET.
IT WAS A STRANGE SCENE.
IT SPEAKS TO PEOPLE'S NERVES
BEING ON EDGE.
WHAT IS THE OVERALL FEELING
IN THE CITY TODAY?
WE'VE HEARD PEOPLE SAY LET'S
GET BACK TO NORMAL.
WE'VE HEARD PEOPLE SAY WE'RE IN
SUCH FEAR.
WE'VE HEARD PEOPLE SAY WE'RE
GOING TO STAND UP TO IT.
WHAT ARE YOU HEARING FROM
PEOPLE?
Reporter: I HEARD ALL OF
THOSE THINGS.
I TALKED TO A WOMAN NAMED
STEPHANIE.
SHE LIVES HERE IN FRANCE WITH
HER HUSBAND AND HER LITTLE BOY.
SHE SAYS THEY COWERED AT HOME
ALL DAY FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.
THEY DECIDED WE HAVE TO TAKE A
STAND, WE HAVE TO TRY TO GET
BACK TO NORMAL.
SHE AND HER HUSBAND AND HER
LITTLE BOY CAME TO THE
GATHERING PLACE WHERE THERE'S A
HUGE MEMORIAL TO THE VICTIMS.
SHE TOLD ME A VERY INTERESTING
STORY.
HER LITTLE BOY IS 10 MONTHS
OLD.
SHE WAS BORN THE WEEK OF THE
ATTACK BACK IN JANUARY.
NOW HERE AS HE APPROACHES 1-
YEAR-OLD, PARIS HAS GONE
THROUGH AN EVEN WORSE ATTACK.
SOMEDAY SHE'LL HAVE TO EXPLAIN
